How To Global Companies

How To Global Companies I was on the phone with January You Get It winner Rob Humphrey and he said something like wouldnt it be cool if there was an application where people could rank and comment on local companies, and job seekers could see what others thought about them? Im sure there are websites out there to do that this is a feature that we included in JibberJobber from early on, and its available to regular and premium users. Heres how it works: When you add a new company (or edit an existing company) youll see a checkbox at the top of the form to add the company to the global companies map: Then, on the map page you can filter to just the global companies: If there are any global companies close to you (you can designate close the default is within 25 miles of your house) then youll see those on the map heres what I see: If I click on any of them Ill see the following pop-up: Note that when I add a company to the list of Global Companies it does not send my ranking, or my notes, or my log entries so it doesnt tie the company to me or share stuff I think is confidential just general contact information. Heres what the numbers mean: Comments: anyone can leave a comment about Express Personnel Services and once people leave comments then anyone can see the comments. Zoom: allows me to zoom closer on the map Report Fake Company: we dont want this cluttered with crap so if you find a fake company (usually entered when people are testing this out) then click this and it will get flagged. Get Directions: opens a window with directions from your house to this company how cool is that?? LinkedIn: opens your LinkedIn account and shows you who you know with this company name in their profile. Rate this company: allows you to rate them from 1 to 5. Why did we include these features in JibberJobber? When I started my job search I was relatively new to this area. I knew about major employers, and came across a list of top 75 employers, but I felt there were so many companies that were like that awesome hole-in-the-wall restaurant only locals knew about them. I thought wouldnt it be cool if I could find those other companies! This is a way to help other professionals in your area know about companies that dont make the popular lists. Also, I figured that this would allow me to see the local companies, whether Im looking here in Salt Lake or Im thinking about moving to Orlando I could move my map and see what others had to say about these companies. Finally, I figured that JibberJobber users were going to be more responsible, and less scathing in their ratings and comments. Its not to say there wont be negative, but Im guessing it wont become sophomoric. As you add companies to your list please think about adding them to the Global Companies map, or list. This can be a great resource for JibberJobber users to share information with one another (also, if you own a company, or work at a company that should be on this list, please add it to the list!) You Were Terminated. You Suck.

You Were Terminated. You Suck. Terminated. Downsized. Right-sized. Laid off. Fired. Disengaged. Do you identify yourself with your job title or role? I did. I went from Im Jason, General Manager to Im Jason, I dont have a job (and in my head I heard Im a loser.) Ive seen too many professionals and executives between jobs that have taken it way too personally. I can see it in their eyes. I can hear it in their voices. I know why this hurts so much I know because I was critical of the guy that lost a job (or couldnt get a new one immediately). I used to think it was their own fault for (a) not choosing a better major, (b) not getting a graduate degree, (c) not taking good risks at work, (d) not developing better relationships with key people, (e) not producing, or being valuable at work the list goes on and on. And then I found out it isnt necessarily anyones fault. Its not the MBAs fault, with 20 years of incredible experience. Its not the lawyers fault, who is one of the best in her field. Its not the PhDs fault, who was one of the best research scientists in the company. Maybe its managements fault. Maybe its the owners fault. Maybe its the customers fault. Maybe the economy is to blame. Maybe maybe maybe. Maybe just maybe, we are not immune to this unemployment thing. When I read the statistics the ones that say Ill change jobs nine times before I retire or Ill change careers up to six times I need to believe it. Because I didnt before. I thought I was above that. I thought my degrees, experience and personal charm would make me immune. It didnt. And it wont in the future. There is no immunity. Ive talked with too many people Ive met because of JibberJobber that should never be out of work but they are because of things outside of their control. I have learned two things from this experience: A. It happens. It happens to almost everyone. One of the best results of going to a job-seekers network meeting was seeing the types of people that were there. I thought I would be the most qualified, highest educated, most sophisticated person in the room. What I found were people that ran circles around me. To hear their stories was discouraging (what? Go to school for a long time and still end up here??), but it helped me understand that it happens and there isnt necessarily anything you can do to prevent it. B. You have to move on. Dont sit around trying to figure out what you could have done differently. Dont try and figure out what is being said about you. Dont let depression suck you in. Dont define yourself based on what happened. Pick up the pieces, do a personal inventory, get help if you need it (I strongly recommend finding a coaching relationship to have someone else help you through this process). Figure out what job search strategies are (I took months to really dig into this) and move on. So maybe you lost your job. But you dont suck. You Were Terminated. You Suck. Terminated. Downsized. Thinking of Entering a Career in Recruitment

Thinking of Entering a Career in Recruitment Think that a career in recruitment might be the right path for you to follow? If youre prepared for a fast pace environment and consider yourself a people person, then why not?! Recruitment isnt usually an industry that people dream of getting into and rather fall into by chance; however, this doesnt mean that it isnt a career that they dont learn to love and thrive in. After all, it can be gratifying when you manage to place a candidate; not to mention theres good money in it too! So if youd like to test your hand as a recruiter, heres where you can start. Qualifications You dont need a top degree to start a career in recruitment; what you do need is a can do attitude and  a good way with people. Could you talk the ears off a stranger? Love meeting new and getting to know new people? If so, this could be the perfect career path for you. Though formal qualifications are not essential to become a recruiter, you must possess the ability to meet deadlines and targets. Attitude Recruitment is very target based, so you must be a driven individual to achieve your best and reach your earning potential. A positive attitude will go far, and the  level of effort and commitment you put in will determine how successful you are and how much you earn in the job. It is essential that a recruiter also comes across as friendly and approachable, and are willing to listen to their clients and candidates needs; as well  as being confident talkers. Long hours When starting out in recruitment you should be prepared to work long hours, as it certainly wont be a matter of new business and candidates for roles being dropped at your feet, so youll need to invest time into finding them!  Once you have been doing it for a while and built a strong network of contacts, you may be able to cut down your hours, as you can rely more on referrals and your knowledge of the industry. Outside of the time set aside for  researching and networking, you will also be required to go out and meet clients and candidates, as well as screening CVs and producing job descriptions; so dont expect your workload to be light! Gain an understanding of the job Before attending any interviews for recruitment jobs, it is essential that you have an idea about the recruitment process and what would be required of you in the role. You must be able to demonstrate that you understand all of the responsibilities of sourcing and contacting candidates, to creating job descriptions and holding interviews. Network The key to quick and efficient recruitment is building a broad network of professionals within the industry you are hiring into. Not only will this cut down the time you spend sourcing candidates, but you can also call upon your contacts for referrals, speeding up the process and improving the quality of candidates significantly. Networking is also essential for finding new business and maintaining relationships with clients, so its a necessary skill for budding recruiters.

Which Women in Recruitment Do You Admire and Why

Which Women in Recruitment Do You Admire and Why Women make up a large part of the recruitment  industry, and a lot of which are leading and innovating the ways in which we approach recruitment, HR, employer branding and more. So in this weeks panel segment, we ask our experts to discuss which women in recruitment they admire, and why? Angela Bortolussi I can say, my mom, right? Haha. She’s been my number one cheerleader in all my career adventures (including supporting me on my move to Los Angeles, California with Recruiting Social) she’s provided me a wealth of knowledge on the recruitment industry, but most importantly she taught me that failing is okay, we all have bad days, but to always remember, tomorrow is a new day. Funny fact though, at the young age of 12 she even taught me her 1990s-version of an ATS (using Excel) inputting title in one column, employer in the next column, then highlight the resume for “keywords”. Angela Bortolussi, Partner at Recruiting Social. Liz Sebag-Montefiore Dr Elisabeth Marx is a leadership expert advising the boards and executive teams of multinationals,  family owned businesses and private equity firms in Europe, the US and the Middle East. She served  on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Gender Gap and co-chaired the London  Chapter of Women Corporate Directors for Heidrick  Struggles. She writes for the Financial Times  on management issues and is also a consultant at INSEAD’s Global Leadership Centre where she  works on a variety of programmes, including the Executive MBA, the AMP and company specific  programmes. Liz Sebag-Montefiore,  Director and Co-Founder 10Eighty. Lysha Holmes I admire all women in recruitment, especially those are also bringing up a family. To be able to juggle the responsibilities of raising children combined with the targets of recruitment is a tall order and any woman who manages to gain success in both is a true inspiration to any. However, this should include working dads too! Lysha Holmes, Owner and Recruiter of Qui Recruitment R2R. Ruth Penfold Almost too many to mention, there are so many passionate and clever women in this space. I make it my business to get to know and learn from as many of them as possible. So to anyone I have missed here you are all power houses and goddesses.  Jennifer Candee at Mondelez; for her general ability to run big stuff and make it look easy. Katie-Mai Kong at Hubbub; for the humility, fairness and love she infuses into what she does. Layla Kidwai at Funding Circle; for her passion and enthusiasm to level up recruitment. Jane Reddin at Balderton; for her ambitious, game changing mindset and her passion for building great startups. Noor van Boven now at N26; for her matter of fact approach and unadulterated clarity. Ruth Penfold, Director of Talent Acquisition, Shazam. Amanda Bell I’ve been lucky to know many phenomenal women in my recruiting career, but one really sticks out to me. Laurie Deneschuk, while no longer technically a recruiter, has taught me so much about the way people work and how to build bridges as a leader. I was fortunate to meet her when I first started to people-manage, and she’s coached me through some of the most challenging, exciting, and rewarding experiences in my career. She is also a phenomenal example of how to dig in and build when you change careers she used to be an engineer, but she’s now the Head of People and Places at Anki. Amanda Bell, Director of Recruiting at Lever. Caroline Stokes I don’t want to play the gender game. I admire men and women in recruitment that are genuine, authentic, display genuine understanding of humanness and demonstrates an ability to learn, grow and evolve the industry for the better. If recruiters can help their companies to thrive, we all win. Caroline Stokes, Founder of FORWARD and The Emotionally Intelligent Recruiter. Libby Herrmann I admire women who inspire and create opportunities for other women. Women who roll up their sleeves and practice accountability, ownership as well as servant leadership for the teams they lead and serve. With respect to individual contributors and leaders alike, I most admire those who are bold in practicing thought leadership and who aren’t fearful of disrupting status quo.   Overall, I admire the candor and perspective of an optimist and the authentic passion recruitment professionals share for helping others achieve their career aspirations. Libby Herrmann,  Client Relationship Manager at WilsonHCG. Rebecca Fraser I would have to say I don’t look at one individual. I admire females that seek to drive innovation and are happy to have the challenging conversation that might support a change in the way that a business recruits or supports females transitioning throughout the workforce. Rebecca Fraser, National Executive Committee, Career Development Association of Australia. Poonam Mawani There are not many women in  leadership roles in recruitment and that is a great shame, But just some of the  amazing women include Melanie Forbes, Tara Ricks, Natasha Clarke and Ann Swain.  All have achieved great things whilst remaining true to themselves. Poonam Mawani, Director at Azuki Accounts.

The Pros and Cons of Hiring College Graduates CareerMetis.com

The Pros and Cons of Hiring College Graduates Education is an important aspect of each person’s life. However, it is worth not forgetting that it is just a prelude before further development, an intermediate stage preceding career building. Therefore, universities should not transmit knowledge for the sake of knowledge itself but keep in mind the ways of its practical application, consider students as future competitors on the labor market who would seek good workplaces in prestigious companies.evalIn this article, I have outlined the main things educators can do to prepare young people especially college graduates for the future.Developing the Key Skillsa) Problem-solvingevalBusinesses seek employeeswho would be able to solve their problems, work in stressful conditions, find ways out of challenging situations. Young people will not acquire relevant skills by just listening to professors’ explanations and taking notes at lectures. The theory should be supplemented with practice, real cases, trial, and error experience so that students could learn to cope with roadblocks. Professors should create scenarios of situations that students may face at their future workplace, offer different developments and ask learners to make some steps. Hypothetical problems may be addressed individually or in a team. For example, persons studying architecture may be asked to plan large-scale construction without exceeding a rather modest budget, to find ways to purchase lacking supplies.Of course, there will and should be mistakes. After all, young people come to a university to learn, hone their skills and work on problematic issues. The educator’s task is to explain that failure is a normal thing on the way to success, it only hardens a person’s will, makes one stronger and provides valuable experience.b) TeamworkMany students do not like group projects. However, such activities boost teamwork skills which are highly appreciated at any enterprise, prepare young people for communicating with supervisors, colleagues, an d clients.evalProfessors should invite learners to collaborate, distribute responsibilities, exchange ideas, inform each other about the work done. For example, students may plan an event or develop a creative project together. It is important for an educator to track teamwork and get feedback. One should ask learners about their experience, emotions, and impressions, whether everyone was feeling comfortable when working in a group, whether participants reached a mutual understanding and had no conflicts.Over some time, young people will feel more relaxed in a team environment, show initiative, leadership qualities, learn to look at things from their peers’ perspective.c) Written CommunicationAcademic writing is very different from business correspondence. It is clear that young specialists will not write essays and term papers at the workplace. It is much more important for them to know how to compile reports and e-mails.evalProfessors should create more opportunities for developm ent in this area, ask young people to summarize their projects and performance in writing.d) Strong Work EthicIn many respects, an employee’s attitudes towards a company influence one’s professionalism. When a person is inspired, feels like a part of the greater whole, perceives colleagues like a family, it is easier for one to work productively and contribute to common goals. Many young people think that career building is only a way to earn money.Since studentship is the time of intensive personality formation, educational institutions have an opportunity to instill higher moral values, influence learners’ worldview and help them to love what they do. Then work will cease to be a burdensome duty and start to bring joy.In the conditions of intense business competition, an increasing number of organizations have no choice but to hire fresh college grads. The latter are employed either during their campus interviewsor they hunt for a job on their own as soon as they leave colle ge. Here, the opinions vary greatly: while some believe that young employees are behind seasoned ones when it comes to their potential, others give them employment with open arms.In fact, employing young professionalsis not so bad especially when employers know what benefits they can get. Unfortunately, along with many advantages, there are also disadvantages associated with hiring fresh graduates. For all employers, to see which way the wind is blowing, it is necessary to weigh all the pros and cons provided further.Arguments in Favor of Employing Inexperienced GradsThose who have recently left college have some advantages. Because of these pros, many companies tend to hire them right after they obtain a diploma. Let’s consider the factors which contribute to employing the youth.1) They Don’t Require High SalariesevalAs they have just come to the industry, the level of their experience is far from perfect. Therefore, they don’t make a claim for a highly-paid job straight away . For businesses, these employees are cheaper than seasoned ones. Since experienced professionals ask for high rewards, turning to recent grads is not a bad idea.In any case, this doesn’t mean that businesses offer too low salaries, this means that they offer them what they deserve in accordance with their competence and talents. Hiring freshly graduated candidates is an attractive opportunity for startup businesses that cannot afford to pay much money.2) They Have Fresh Views and More PotentialSince recent graduates are new to the industry, they probably can inspire some bright ideas.evalUnlike seasoned workers who know the business inside out and probably have already run out of their creative energy, they are more likely to think outside the box. This will definitely give many benefits to your company. Moreover, they can draw your attention to many problems which aroused long before so that the new ideas and a completely different way of thinking can be implemented in your enter prise.3) They Show More Serious Attitude to WorkSince they are new to their position they take it more seriously and are more into it than seasoned workers. The latter usually take their work for granted, don’t like pushing themselves too hard, and thus are more likely to opt-out of their tasks. This is mainly because of their huge professional experience.Unlike them, fresh grades don’t mind doing overtime and involving in many projects as, in such a way, they want to show themselves off and get on the right side of their boss.eval4) They are Very Comfortable with the Use of TechsContrary to the common belief that modern youth uses the Internet only for cutting loose for social media and obtaining professional assignment assistance, such as personal statements writing services, and so forth, they handle innovations very well, and their knowledge is not limited to what is mentioned.Indeed, young individuals are more productive at work than old professionals who got used to stickin g to out-of-date methods. The latter ones are less interested in gaining new knowledge and acquiring updated info about new techs.Unlike them, recent grads expand their knowledge in this field and thus are more likely to bring more novelties to your company.5) They Grasp Everything EasilySince recent grads know very little about your organization, they are very enthusiastic about learning different sorts of things about it.You will not hear any complaints from them: they tend to work hard and show your eligibility for a particular position.Another Side of the Coin:cons of hiring a college graduate without work experienceLike with everything else, there are also disadvantages in offering jobs to fresh grads. As they are by and large inexperienced workers, they are more likely to mess up a contract. Therefore, it is crucial to handle them properly; otherwise, your business may lose profits, customers, etc. Below, the main cons of the issue are discussed.1) They Have Very High Expectati onsThey think that if they work harder, the employer will pay them more. However, they forget that they are not experts and thus cannot be paid like the latter. If they try their best for a while, only then they can ask for a raise. Otherwise, it is inappropriate and unfair to others to ask for a bigger reward without a strong reason.2) They Have Poor Communication SkillsAll people entering the workforce experience alack of diplomacy. No matter how long they have been mastering their communication skills in a higher educational institution, knowing how to communicate and doing this properly are completely different things. They are likely to face many difficulties related to this issue from the very beginning of their careers.3) They are Not Professionals YetAs they have just entered the workforce, they cannot be treated like professionals: before they can become ones much training is needed. Very often they just don’t know what they should do and what they shouldn’t. This is beca use they are new to the place. They may fail to dress properly and can disobey senior staff. Indeed, it requires much time and effort to train them.All-in-all, hiring inexperienced workers has the benefits many businesses are aware of. Those hunting for a job straight upon graduation usually lack relevant knowledge and diplomacy. However, it is not an issue if there are good employee onboarding programs. For startup and small business, hiring relatively low-paid workersis a huge benefit; therefore, they welcome recent grads with great pleasure. And they have many reasons for this: young individuals learn easily, are serious about their first work, have a fresh approach to common things, and are good experts in new techs. All of these allow them to add some value to the businesses.
